a note on kiel

(Life has taken over a bit, but we’re still here!)

And this is pretty much our entire regatta for Kiel:

Out …

And in …

Final results.

and the prize for the shortest regatta goes to …

Kieler Woche, with only 4 races completed. In 4 days.

It started well enough, with 3 races in 20 knots completed on the first day. Then the wind blew out and we got into a pattern in the next three:

0845 Arrive at the club at 8.45am
0900 Attend the weather briefing, which basically tells us there’s not going to be wind
0915 Achtung bitte! Races are postponed! Further information at 11am.
1100 Achtung bitte! Races are still postponed! Further information at 12pm/1pm/3pm … you get the picture.
1600 AP over A. We all go home.

Well, there was a bit of variation here and there. The first AP day they sent us out and AP-ed on water until 1.30pm when they canned it for the day. Surprisingly early, but maybe there was an important German match playing in the world cup? :P

The second AP day we didn’t even get sent out.

And the third, we finally launched at noon, to have one sad little race in 2-3 knots to end off the regatta.

Well, can’t say it hasn’t been interesting, at least!

Next up, Weymouth in August. Now that venue’s known for being windy and wave-y … we’ll see!

Here we go again!

Once more, we’re counting down the days to leaving Singapore. We’re off to Kiel, Germany in a couple of days, for the famous Kieler Woche.

This is a regatta well-known to any seasoned sailor. Kiel Week is held annually, and the event covers classes from International to Olympic to Offshore. Hundreds of boats take part every year – I’ve never seen more boats in one place than at Kiel.

The regatta is staggered, with a week for Olympic classes and a week for International and Offshore classes. As an Olympic class, we’ll be racing in the first week (19-23).

Aside from the sailing, Kiel Week is also a time where market and food stalls are set up. It’s a bit of a festival, I gather.

The picture’s from 2006, when I was last in Kiel. The camera isn’t wide enough to cover the entire harbour yard – imagine boats stretching left and right off the screen!

The tentage is where the food stalls are – yummy hot dogs, gelato, crèpes, pizza … er, not that I’ve tried, of course, surely I wouldn’t eat things that Craig disapproves of … ;)

Kiel is also an important regatta for us as it’s the first selection trial for Asian Games for the 470 women.

Wish us luck!
